There is more to the Occupy Movement: it’s about empowerment

Many of you might not be aware that most of the people who are involved with the Occupy Movement worldwide are not sleeping in tents. Instead they are busy doing other stuff like meeting (both indoors and out) all over this country—and all over the world—to talk about their common concerns, goals and ideas for making this country (and the world) look more like the one they envision.

And contrary to what you might have heard or read, the Occupy Movement does have a unified focus/goal/plan. The movement’s overwhelming focus is about empowering people. Empowering those who feel their voices are not being represented by a government that is more concerned with the rights of corporate “persons” than actual human persons, as well as those people who haven’t yet realized that they are being oppressed, suppressed and repressed by the corporate elite and their government pawns.

To that end, We the People, are meeting in community centers, coffee shops, public plazas and community tents all over the world and holding meetings, general assemblies, open discussions and teach-ins. We are changing the discussion. We are having an impact. And our numbers are growing.

More and more folks are realizing that there is more to Occupy than just what one hears on cable news, and from other traditional media outlets, and are finding out that Occupy is more than just a group of people sleeping in tents for no apparent reason. They are realizing that Occupy is all of us…or at least 99% of us.

At a recent meeting this past Saturday, members of Occupy Delaware broke into small groups to discuss 3 ideas to bring to the larger group based on the prompt “What is the most important thing about Occupy Delaware?”.

Some of the ideas that came up during those discussions include the following:

  • Getting money out of politics (this was an overwhelming concern that was addressed by most of the smaller groups)
  • The idea of moving beyond a corporate world.
  • The importance of making the political process more accessible for more people and starting locally and moving globally. Everyone has a voice that should be heard and should be able to be a part of the process. Reconnect everyone.
  • Educate people for the need to be actively, physically, directly, socially involved in their community.
  • Empowering the unempowered.
  • Using the movement as a catalyst for synergistically empowering other activist groups.
  • Bringing about a return to Glass-Steagall/pass Prudent Banking Act to separate local banks from investment banks.
  • Focusing on independent local business.
  • Re-examining the length/hours of the work week.

This was an open discussion of members of your community, your state, your country and your world who are actively trying to bring about the change they wish to see in the world.
