Health and Human Services’ Sanitation and Health Guidelines

Occupy Delaware Health and Human Services’ Sanitation and Health Guidelines *

  • Please dispose of all trash in proper receptacles: We will have both recycling containers and regular trash containers for disposing of your trash. Please use them responsibly.
  • Please keep all food in plastic containers: If you bring food in you must be responsible for its safe storage and the trash left behind after consuming said food.
  • Wash your hands and use sanitation/anti-bacterial gel often: disease spreads through germs and one of the quickest ways is through dirty hands.
  • Urinate and defecate in bathrooms or port-a-potties only. The smell of urine is not only unpleasant urinating on the ground is also a health risk. Your bowel movements also carry a multitude of disease that could make you and those around you severely ill.
  • Curb your dog and clean up after their messes. If you bring a dog to the Occupation, remember that dog is your responsibility. Know the city and state laws. Your dog must be on a leash or contained within an enclosed space. Do not leave your dog unattended. Have your dog up to date on their shots and keep a collar with contact information attached on a tag in case your dog is lost or you are arrested.
    • Also, be aware that Occupation visitors may also have dogs and we cannot control their responsibility level.
    • *We suggest you make arrangements for your dog should you be arrested with friends or a family member.
  • Do not feed the wild life as it will attract bugs and vermin.
  • Keep your own dishes clean. HHS will have tubs (hopefully before encampment) for washing dishes but it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself.
  • Take a bag of trash and a bag of recycling with you when you leave and remember the carry in, carry out rule…if you bring in anything that creates trash please remove the trash when you leave.
  • Rinse out containers that you wish to save.
  • Do not spit on ground or in campgrounds. Doing so spreads bacteria that people can track into the living space.
  • Smoke outside of the Occupation area ONLY. Please be courteous to your fellow Occupiers. Some Occupiers have health issues which are aggravated by smoke. There is to be NO SMOKING in the COMMUNAL TENT, or DURING GENERAL ASSEMBLIES.
  • Separate yourself if you are sick. If sick go home or stay home. Return when you are well.
  • If you are bleeding go to the medical aid tent right away. Blood can carry disease. If the bleeding is more than a band aid can handle and stitches may possibly be required please call 911, have someone nearby call 911, or find a Peace Steward who will be able to call 911 for you.
  • Ask for help if you have nothing dry to wear. Hypothermia may develop if you are sweaty or wet in the cold. Please go to the HHS Comfort Station for assistance.
  • Don’t do drugs. If you do drugs you endanger not just yourself but the entire Occupation. (See the Legal and Security Guidelines for Effective Occupation for more on how drug use will be handled).
  • If you did drugs and need help ask we are not the police and are concerned foremost with your health and safety. If you did drugs and need assistance please go to the medical aid tent.
  • Please bring and use tissues. Using your clothes or reusing a cloth tissue can also spread disease.
  • Check in on your Occupy neighbors when it’s cold! You are your brother’s keeper!
  • Remain hydrated. Even in the cold dehydration can be very serious.
  • Stay warm but don’t overdo. Sweating is your enemy in the cold.
